Warehousing Software – Streamlining Your Business
In earlier times, warehousing management was a very paper-intensive which was very difficult to co-ordinate various activities happening in different parts of the warehouse. Warehousing management software is software designed specifically to handle and manage the movement and storage of materials throughout a particular warehouse. WMS helps you to incorporate with data-collection systems and process the allied transactions; that includes shipping, receiving of inventory, shelving and picking. The system also directs and optimizes the stock put away depending on real-time information. It is especially for users who are wholesalers, distributors, online retailers, importers/exporters, and other inventory-based businesses. It is of utmost help for the warehouse managers in keeping a track of the storage and supply process. Moreover, it helps you use your available workforce to the maximum.
The WMS use AIDC (Auto ID Data Capture) technology to keep an eye on the flow of products. The ADIC technology includes a variety of equipments like barcode scanners, high radio frequency identification, wireless LANS, and mobile computers, etc. The main objective of WMS is to provide a set of computerized procedures to handle the returns and delivery of the stock into the warehouse. It not only makes your work easier and accurate but also faster than ever before. It is known as inventory software, as it keeps a track of all the movement of products happening in the warehouse. It was initially just a system to control the movement and storage of materials, but now it is also used for various other activities like transportation management, order management and complete accounting systems. Its setup and processing can vary from one software vendor to another, but the basic function of this software will be to determine the sequence of various activities like when and where to stock and pick, and thus help in managing large inventories and manage complex operations.
Least of all, a Management system should have three things, a flexible location system, built-in memory to collect data and be user friendly.
The most important question here is, do you really need a WMS?
It is not necessary that every warehouse needs a WM system. No doubt, any warehouse can benefit from the functionality of it, but then the question is, will the benefit be great enough to justify the initial and ongoing cost of the software? They are big, complex, expensive and data intensive applications. They require a lot of initial setup, system resources, as well as a lot of ongoing data management to continue to run. To cut a long story short, you will have to ‘manage’ your Warehousing Management System which means, you will have to have an entire new subdivision to manage your managing system.
The implementation of WMS has a lot of benefits. It will reduce your labor costs; increases accuracy, increases the ability to service the customers. Besides, labor efficiencies, and the other determining factors in deciding whether to implement a WMS, as it usually tends to be more often related with the need to do something to service your customers in a way that your current system does not support. It leaves nothing to chance or in the hands of the workers.
Moreover, with each addition of technology there is an additional spring of potential problems. One should not take this as a condemnation of Warehouse Management Systems. In many warehouses, this functionality depends on their ability to serve their customers and remain competitive with those in the market. It is just important to note that every solution has its advantages and disadvantages and you can overcome it only by having a good understanding of the potential proposals that will allow you to make better decisions related to the different levels of technology that best suits the unique environment of your warehouse.
